Together, but not mixed: Homophily in mapuche and non-mapuche intergroup relations

Authors

Abstract

This article characterizes the phenomenon of homophily in the formation of bonds of trust between mapuche and non-mapuche individuals. We used data from the CEP 2016 survey, which consists of a representative sample of mapuche population and includes a mirror sample of non-mapuche population. Case-control logistic regression models were applied for ego-centered data, which allows us to examine the absolute rate of interaction between sociodemographic groups, as well as the rate of contact in relation to a model based on random expectations. The results show that non-mapuche people tend to be much more homophilic compared to mapuche people. We discuss the implications of these findings in relation to social cohesion policies and the importance of family ties in the case of mapuche communities.
