Abstract

This article presents relevant findings on the experiences of care and early parenting of mothers and fathers with disabilities in Chile. The aim is to make visible the barriers and challenges that arise when exercising their parental role. Interviews conducted with 12 people with disabilities (physical, visual and hearing) in Chile show the persistence of discriminatory practices, lack of institutional support and attitudinal barriers. Through interviews and a subsequent thematic analysis, 4 key dimensions were identified: social prejudices, lack of accessibility, support needs and concerns about care and parenting. Although the international framework and Chilean regulations guarantee the right to start a family and receive the necessary support, it is not possible to evidence this guarantee through the experience of this group of people with disabilities. This situation highlights the remaining challenges in advancing inclusive sexual and reproductive health. It is concluded that there is an urgent need to implement inclusive public policies on physical accessibility, health and education. Only in this way the State can guarantee the full exercise of maternity and paternity of persons with disabilities.
